Traditionally it has been Sony. Increasingly though a lot of Sony products are no longer made in Japan and for those that are, you pay a premium. In any case, I think the major revenue stream at Sony is shifting to the gaming side (Playstations) so that might be a sign. Most of the evidence about Sony being better also tends to turn out to be anecdotal.
I think you have to compare product by product. I no longer like SONY because I had a CD player go down and brought it in for warranty service 1 day after warranty was up. They wanted twice what the thing cost me to repair it. Since then I avoid them at all costs.
I’ve had good luck w/ Sony for the most part. My receiver and surround speakers are sony and have performed admirably. I had a samsung DVD player, but it died - but then I think the Sony DVD player I have now is on it’s last legs too.
It really depends on the cost range and the type of electronics you are looking at. If it’s cell phones or MP3 players, You gotta go with Samsung. If you are looking for entry level home electronics like DVD players, TVs, AV Receivers (especially televisions), you cannot beat samsung. If you look at high end stuff and money is not the driving fator, sony is a better way to go. The site below is a great reference for Home Electronics.
What type of electronic are you looking for?
Samsung has really good LCD technology and Sony has nice projectors, tv’s and receivers. Actually, the two are in the middle of building a plant together so many items will be very simmilar.

Sony. Especially in the T.V. arena.

Having said that, I prefer Sony myself.

Both are competing heavily for top spot.
However, SONY products are of better quality and slightly more priced than the SAMSUNG products.
For more durability and superior finish , SONY is still tops.
