30 power is far too much unless you use a tripod, you'll never stop the shaking; I think you'll find 15 power quite enough, I use a pair of 10 power ones which I find adequate and easily handled.

Assuming that you could hold the binoculars steady (unlikely), then you will find that the field of view means you will have one heck of a job finding the plane in the first place. I would go for a max strength of 15x for hand holding. If comparing similar bino's then take into account the field of view (usually expressed in degrees or in ft at 1000yds). The bigger this is the, better the chance you have of finding your plane before is disappears.

To find the plane, try this... Assuming you have a decent contrail (ie the cloud line left by the plane), then aim behind the plane and down. Scan up until you get to the trail and then follow the trail until you find the plane at the end of it.

Oh and a big safety tip... Make sure the sun will not be in your line of sight, otherwise not finding a plane will be the least of your problems.

Enjoy your planespotting.

30x50 is way too much power... if they are flying low over your house, you would not want to zoom in that much, not to mention you would have trouble finding the aircraft... I would reccomend a much lower power binocular.... good luck...

30x50 you will need a tripod.Hands too shaky with that magnification. Good for static display. With a jet at 500 mph. too hard to track and keep in focus at the same time.

I think you will have more satisfaction with 15x70 powere "bins"
I have Helios Stellar Observation Binoculars, a great all around observation binocular.
