I was considering a 61″ plasma, but will be sitting 17 feet from the unit, so now considering an overhead projector and a larger screen. I am told, however, that the projectors are light sensitive, and that I might be out of luck.

I always recomend a over head projector for a home theather system. Unfortunately due to you having a great deal of windows and a lot of light in your viewing area you wouldn’t get a decent view of what ever you are viewing. If you’re going able to consider a 61in plasma then I’m sure buying a few good quality blinds to enjoy your projector won’t be a dent in your pocket book.
The generic answers is to look for high lumens. You would need at least 2500 lumens. 3000 would be optimal for your situation and 3500 would be the best. I don’t believe they go higher than that currently without spending an arm and a leg.
idealy none, a projector with a higher lumin output at least 3500 or higher will be needed to make the picture visable with high ambient light. The best option would be to cover the light source with heavy coverings or dark covers. As far as manufacturers go it depends on your video source or budget. If you want more info or quotes, I am a electronics dealer. You can email me with any further questions if you like.
I would consider using better blinds, a very right projector, and a high gain screen. If you can’t get the light level at least down a little, try a plasma, but beware, plasma screens are highly reflective, and will cause issues with glare.
You should get a light control system in your living room to dim the light when needed. In addition to that you should get some shades.
Not that many projectors have 2000 or more lumens so oull have to look around.

Projectors are ment for dark rooms. Remember every movie theater you’ve been tyo? They make it darker before they play the movie.
All of the light in the room will wash out your picture and make it look terrible.
Stick with the plasma, it has the same bightness no matter where you are in relation to the screen.
Good Luck!

You need something that has a huge amount of lumens. The highest I’ve seen is 3500 so far. I say buy a 61 ” pioneer plasma and call it a day.
