It may not be the clutch. It could be the Gear-box, especially if it is only second gear.

I assume that you need brute force on the gear stick (not the clutch pedal).

The obvious reason is probably to do with the linkage. But then that would imply that the problem should have been there even before you changed the clutch.

As this occured only after changing the clutch, my guess is that he missed to tighten the center screw when reassembling the clutch. That can have all sorts of queer problems. Check it out.

PS: Don’t run the car by forcing the gear stick. Something will give eventually and having it done now will save you tons of money.

With the greatest of respect to your friend, it sounds like he doesn’t really know what he’s doing. It’s probably the linkage being out of adjustment, a mechanic should be able to sort it out easily.

O.K WELL INSTEAD OF BRUTE ORCE! try double clutching the gears which means when changing up you go from first to neutral clutch up and then press down engage second, on slowing down the car from third or fourth, go in to neutral tyhen kick the gas pedal slightly then go for second gear, if that dont work then take the gear box off again check the allignment of the clutch, when it is all reasswmbled go through the gears with the engine off, then with engine on but not engaging them just to check they go in ok, if not it is back to sqaure one.

Hi,
My husband was a mechanic, and he says, have the gate bushes been replaced,because it could be that they need replacing.
If there is a lot of play in the gearstick and the gate is wide then the gears won’t align properly.
So the linkage to the gear box needs to be looked at.

I’m not trying to be rude, but it seems like your friend doesn’t know what he’s doing. Since you didn’t do it either I am guessing that you don’t feel comfortable with major transmision type work. There really only one choice. Take it to a prefessional mechanic.

Just in case you (or your friend) want to try and fix it, it sounds like that the shifter (shifter linkage) is put back wrong. Usually (new) clutches have nothing to do with shifting. When the clutch is old, usually all the gears are hard to shift. If just one gear is hard to select it should like something is binding.

Have you also had the clutch cable changed? these are prone on a 306 as they run close to the exhaust and can stretch through the heat.
