Anyone using your dish-washer as a storage as well? Is it true the plates have a foul smell? Any solution?

I don’t cook frequently and only use the same few plates & bowls everly time. Instead of taking them out and in again, why not let them stay there? It keeps away dust & insects as well. I am thinking of buying one for my new kitchen but the salesman told me my plates will smell aweful. Anyone willing to share experience?
