Your best bet is probably to get good filters for your forced air (forced air isn't the best for asthmatics, either, but if you have it...) system and replace them often enough, try to keep up on housework, avoid carpeting and such things that keep your environment dusty (including stuffed animals), and (of course) try to keep your home as smoke-free as possible. Try to keep humidity at a moderate level--mold can cause episodes for my mom, and maybe for you too. Hope that helps a bit! But my allergist/asthma dr told me that it is much effective if you minimize allergens by vacuuming often, washing linens often in hot water, keep house really clean, dust often, keep animals out of bedroom, etc. If you decide to get a air purifier, the ionizer ones don't make any difference in my experience. the hepa filter one does, but only if you remember to clean or change the filter often. You are still going to be exposed to such things though because even if you filter it out of the air it will still be on you clothing, bedding, furniture, floor, walls, blinds. I have one and it helps a little, but buy one with a hepa filter. Do not get one with an ionizer as it could aggravate your allergies. Do not get the one from sharper image or the oreck, I have researched them and they really do not work effectively. If you use it in your bedroom and change your sheets often, it will help.Also good for cooking fumes.
