It might be a slow leak, in which case simply adding freon might make it work for a year or two. If it's a fast leak, adding freon will make it work for a much shorter time. Since auto repair shops usually charge several hundred dollars for even the most basic AC work, I recommend adding 24 to 32 ounces of freon. Your local auto parts store will have the freon, and will show you how to add it. The freon should cost $20 to $60 total, and will tell you whats going on - and maybe even fix the problem for a year or two.
