A very fine filter can filter out bacteria. A really good electrostatic filter can trap bacteria and viruses. Always get the kind with disposable filters though, because you really don't want to clean them. Yeeech, especially if they have filtered out bacteria and viruses... Handle with rubber gloves, and a surgeon's mask. Better yet, get someone else to do it... Air filters do not kill bacteria, but some might have an ultra-violet light to kill them.
