This happened to us...the problem was that somehow (we still don't really know how...probably when it was initially installed) a small piece of bent metal got stuck in the line...at the bend. After a few years of draining, the hard water build up (calcium, lime...whatever) was all backed up in there, so it wasn't draining. So, check the lines...unfortunately, this means pulling it out and shoving something through there (all the way from the dishwasher to the outlet in the sink...check it all) If you need a pump, check the papers...sometimes people sell old dishwashers or parts of them because only one part of theirs went out. Before you look to buy a new pump or a new dishwasher, check all the lines.

It's a little bit of a pain, but it is fixable, if you're handy. The pump solenoid could also be stuck, but I'd definitely look at the line first. What happens is the pump opens and starts trying to pump, but there is nothing to pump, so it just hums. Most likely the line is plugged. Make sure there are no obstructions inside the dish compartment at the bottom. Could be blocked from inside. Does sink drain ok? If sink is ok and unit worked last time, you need a new pump.
