Most likely you have a welded compressor contactor (I would bet my next paycheck on it) but don't worry it is an easy fix. This is a common issue and no matter what you set the T-stat on, the outdoor unit will continue to run. It could be caused by bugs, loose wire causing overamperage, or just an old contactor. Unfortunatley, you should call a repair man or if you know someone with some mechanical ability, they could install a new one without problem. If you need more direction please email me at

Your thermostat is broken & you need to get a new one (best to be the Honeywell® brand)
Get a new thermostat at the following adress:

bad stat.. if a bad filter would not have enough air into house to cool down that much,, change the stat, now thats assuming BOTH the blower inside and condenser out side runnig.

Another simple thing you may want to check is be sure your thermostat is level. If you have a mercury bulb thermostat it has to be perfectly level or it will not work right. Good luck.

I had one that was the complete package unit outside. And it was running constantly. And my problem was that it was low in coolant. And come to find out it was leaking because it was 16 years old and the radiator had rusted out.And since it was so old we had to buy a new one because they stopped selling parts for mine. But without knowing if your unit is old or not it is hard to say.But it could very well be the filters or the thermastat.I would try filters first since they are the cheapest.Good luck.

If it is a central A/C and it was still running (the unit on the outside of the house was running), then the thermostat is suspect.

If it is a wall unit, then it could be that the compressor was not on but the fan was on (which is OK). If the compressor was on (the coils were ice cold), then the thermostat is the prime suspect. Ensure the knob is mounted correctly while you are at it.

While the power is off, turn the thermostat knob through it's full travel and see if you can hear/feel it click on and off at the ambient temperature. No click? Then bad Tstat.
